  4. STOP

I said nothing when they made a Garfield movie. I said nothing when they made, not one, but two Alvin movies. I said nothing when they made a Yogi Bear movie. (Actually, I think I said something, but I can’t remember.)

    But a Smurfs 3D movie?

    REALLY?

I didn’t think movie studios were that out of ideas, but apparently the executives at Sony Pictures turned to each other and said “you know what we need? Another cruddy CGI 3D movie that will get kids to drag their parents to the theatre so they can spend tons of money on overpriced tickets.”

It’s gotten to the point where every week, there is another movie coming out, with a big 3D tacked onto the end of it.

And it’s gotten to the point where, someone, somewhere, for whatever reason, thought turning another old cartoon series into a modernized, urbanized, CGI movie was a decent idea. (But c’mon — we all know this is just for profit.)

And no matter how many negative reviews you throw at these piles of cinema vomit, they keep coming out with them. And for whatever reason, the writers/producers/director/studio find it funny, and “hip” to urbanize the characters of these old cartoons, just to appeal to the next stupid tween generation. Be it with celebrity cameos from the latest hack, making the characters talk in ‘gangsta’ slang, or having them do a full out cover of a recent pop/urban song. (See Alvin)

Or to make the humour really really really stupid (Yogi).

And for whatever reason, people still pay money to see them.

    ENOUGH

Shot this when I was doing the photography for The Grand Theatre’s production of “Grease”. It was for the Grands “High School Project” — every year they do a production at the Grand using kids from local high schools instead of adult actors. The students do everything from making the costumes, the props, even help produce. There were three students assisting the construction of the shows sets at the Grand Theatre’s scenic art shop just off of Veterans Memorial Parkway (for non-Londoners, it’s a road at one of the edges of the city.) Ian here was one of them.

My high school did Sweeney Todd as the 2009 school show. (Central does a school show every 2 years.) I shot photos of the production and rehearsal, and many of the shots ended up in the year book. I actually asked the director of the show, one of Centrals drama teachers, if she could have the cast line up in the final pose of the show so I could do a full cast shot.
I stood on a stool in the middle of the auditorium aisle, holding my camera with a telephoto lens, and snapped out 4-5 photos. I later stitched them all together into what you see here.
Unfortunatly the teacher of my journalism class was also heading the design of that years yearbook. He was also shooting photos of the show as well.
He chose his cast photo over mine. The difference was, my cast shot had everyone in character, with the stage lighting and everything. The one that ended up in the yearbook had the cast smiling and goofing off.
Oh well.
